Research Institute for Climate Change was found in June, 2008 under initiative proposed by Vietnam and United State of America. As a premier institute subordinated to Can Tho University, DRAGON-Mekong Institute is design to become an internationally recognized center of excellence for research and training on the impacts of climate change on major river deltas, and enhancing the resilience of delta communities and ecosystems to climate change.
On 5th June 2018, on the occasion of the trip to Can Tho University and 10 years of established Research Institute for Climate Change - DRAGON Institute (June 2008), the DRAGON institute was honored to welcome the delegation of H.E. Mr. Daniel J. Kritenbrink, U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam; Ms. Mary Tarnowka, U.S. Consul General to Ho Chi Minh city and other delegates from the U.S. Embassy and Consulate General to pay a visit to DRAGON Institute.
At the meeting, the Director of DRAGON Institute, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Hieu Trung shared activities of the institute, projects cooperation between the Institute and the US research partners as well as other international organizations. The two sides also discussed various problems concerning the extreme climate change (salinity, flood and subsidence) and adaptation strategy for the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD). Accordingly, it created a potential collaboration between the Institute and the U.S. academic partners in near future.
