Connecting to the smart cities - Developing a road-map to explore big data analytical solutions to address Mekong Delta’s current challenges
Between 3rd and 6th September (2018), University of Salford (UK) and Can Tho University, Vietnam will be holding a workshop on the topic of ‘Connecting to the smart cities - Developing a road-map to explore big data analytical solutions to address Mekong Delta’s current challenges under the Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund*.
The Lower Mekong Basin is an incredibly dynamic region, currently undergoing rapid urbanisation, economic growth, industrialisation and extensive agriculture development. The workshop at Can Tho University will address rapid urbanisation and development challenges faced within lower Mekong Delta, using cross-disciplinary Smart City and Big Data related innovations. The workshop will focus on Smart City innovations including Internet-of-Things, Cyber-Physical Systems and Ambient Intelligence, to provide a robust solution to challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and development. Approximately 40 early career researchers in data science, smart cities, built environment and related fields from the UK and Vietnam will attend this workshop, in order to discuss future research challenges in this area, leading to build invaluable collaborations for innovation between UK and Vietnamese academic institutions and industry within this theme, focused on improving the social, environmental and economic aspects of urban areas.
Dean Prof Hisham Elkadi from University of Salford (UK) and Dean Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Chi Ngon and Vice Director of DRAGON Institute, Assoc. Prof. Le Anh Tuan (Can Tho University) are lead coordinators of the workshop. The workshop will bring together UK and Vietnamese researchers from multiple disciplines including built environment, engineering, management, computing and social sciences. The focus was on developing multi-disciplinary approaches for adoption of smart city innovations and capacity development of involved early career researchers. The workshop provides opportunities for early career researchers to learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations.
This work was supported by a #ResearcherLinks workshop grant, ID, ID 2017-RLWK8-10565 under the #NewtonFund Vietnam Programme partnership. The grant is funded by the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and delivered by the British Council. For further information, please visit www.newtonfund.ac.uk
