Can Tho University (CTU) in collaboration with the University of Southampton (UK), Kyoto University (Japan), Newcastle University (UK), and Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) are organizing the online workshop on “Strategy for Water Resources Risk Management in the ASEAN Region (COP26)” held at Can Tho University, Vietnam on October 21st, 2021 (14:00 pm) via Zoom meeting.

The workshop will bring together international scientists, key experts from local agencies and academic institutions from the different organizations of Universities, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development related to water resource management in the Mekong Delta. Besides, the workshop is also an opportunity to discuss issues on the current risk management of water resources as well as the project’s results.

ASEAN countries are highly vulnerable to climate change due to the concentration of population and economic activities along the coastline, and a high dependence on agriculture and supporting water resources. To cope with sea-level rise and greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events, development planning must strengthen adaptive capacity. The aim of this project is to map future climate change scenarios in two catchments of two ASEAN countries, and to produce a multi-scale climate adaptation policy and necessary capacity-building within the two study sites in the Mekong River delta in Vietnam and in the Chao Phraya River basin in Thailand.

This workshop is to present the project implementation results in the Mekong Delta, and to discuss with the local experts on:

  • The current stage of water resource management risk under climate change conditions in the Mekong Delta.
  • Integrated water resource system modelling for risk management in the Mekong Delta
  • The water resource risk assessment matrix in the Mekong Delta
