Workshop: “Livelihood, women and water scarcity in the Mekong Delta”

On October 19, 2022, the Institute of Climate Change Research (DRAGON-Mekong), Can Tho University in collaboration with the Center for Women and Development in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD) organized the Workshop "Livelihood, Women and water scarcity in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta”. The workshop was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Van Pham Dang Tri - Director of the Research Institute for Climate Change (DRAGON-Mekong Institute) and MSc. Ngo Thi Tuyet Em - Director of the Center for Women and Development in the VMD.

At the conference, Dr. Tran Anh Thong (University of Melbourne, Australia) reported on the research topic "Livelihood, women and water scarcity in the Mekong Delta" and MSc. Ngo Thi Tuyet Em presented on “Impacts of water scarcity and climate change on the lives of women in the VMD and solutions”. The speakers presented the impacts and solutions being applied in the sub-regions of the Mekong Delta related to water scarcity, climate change, livelihoods, and women.

MSc. Ngo Thi Tuyet Em briefly introduced the activities of the Center for Women and Development in the VMD and raised the urgency of mainstreaming gender and climate change.

Attending the workshop were more than 20 delegates from provinces representing 3 ecological sub-regions of the VMD, namely floodplain, midland, and coastal zone. Delegates include officials of departments, associations, farmers representing the main agricultural farming models, and a number of other interesting businesses along with staff from Can Tho University. The workshop was organized with the goal of improving the resilience of communities, especially farmers and women, through understanding the challenges of water scarcity in the context of climate change happening in VMD. Participants were informed about issues of water resources, and climate change in the 3 sub-regions in terms of nature and management as well as impacts on people's livelihoods and women's lives in the region. In addition, discussion activities with the participation of delegates in each ecological sub-region helped to identify some challenges and impacts of water and climate change issues on the environment, community livelihoods, and women's lives. At the same time, the workshop also listened to the participants share about the difficulties that need to be solved as well as discussed solutions to cope with the problem of water resources and climate change, the orientation of cooperation between the stakeholders, including managers - scientists - businesses - farmers, women, in responding to climate change is taking place increasingly complex.
