Training course "Enhancing environmental protection capacity for the youth in Can Tho city"

From December 23 to 25, 2022, the Research Institute for Climate Change (DRAGON-Mekong), Can Tho University cooperated with the Youth Union, Can Tho University to organize component 1 of the training course " Enhancing environmental protection capacity for the youth in Can Tho city". This is an activity sponsored by the Office of Culture and Educational Information of the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City in the period from October 2022 to September 2023 at Can Tho University.  Shortly, component 2 activities are expected to be implemented at 02 high schools, namely Can Tho University Thuc Hanh Su Pham High School, and Thoi Lai High School.

The project is implemented to raise awareness and capacity for environmental protection and climate change response for students and students in Can Tho city. The training is implemented under the support of experts with major from emission reduction, environmental protection communication, climate change, and water resources. Including Dr. Luong Quang Huy is an expert on greenhouse gas emission reduction from the Department of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Ozone Protection, Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Van Pham Dang Tri, Director of the DRAGON-Mekong Institute, lecturers from the College of Environment and Natural Resources, Can Tho University and the researchers DRAGON-Mekong Institute are in charge of the main teaching for the training course in related fields.

In the first component, 77 students from Can Tho University's colleges and institutes registered to attend the training course. Students who attend the training course are equipped with knowledge about environmental protection, which improves their communication capacity in responding to climate change at home, school, and in the community. In addition to the knowledge provided by the lecture, students now have access to and familiarity with how to plan the activities of an environmental and climate change project, which can then be applied to develop projects based on their own ideas.

The participation of students in the training

During the three days of study, the students participated in five training sessions with experts, which included teamwork activities and high-value gifts to help students improve their soft skills. Students will also be able to demonstrate their strengths and identify strengths to promote as well as weaknesses to overcome as a result of these activities.
