PROMOTING YOUTH ROLE IN RAISING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE VIETNAMESE MEKONG DELTA

On December 28th 2022, the Research Institute for Climate Change (DRAGON-Mekong Institute), Can Tho University (CTU) organized a kick off meeting of the project “Promoting youth role in raising community resilience to climate change in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (Mekong Delta CoRe)”. The project was carried out within the framework of the cooperation program between DRAGON-Mekong Institute and Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research. The aim of the meeting is to introduce the Mekong Delta CoRe project and discuss solutions to promote the participation of young people in response to climate change in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta.

The meeting welcomed Mrs. Vuong Hong Ngoc, Youth Program Officer in UNDP Viet Nam, and Mr. Phan Thanh Tung, Climate Attaché of the British Embassy in Ha Noi. The meeting attracted the attention of more than 70 students from the faculties and schools of CTU and young people who are members of networks and organizations that are working hard to respond to climate change in the Mekong Delta.

In general, the workshop presented the importance of youth engagement in responding to climate change in Vietnam. Additionally, it also mentioned opportunities for young people in supporting communities to respond to climate change – UK strategy in Vietnam. Thereby, the workshop showed the role of the young Vietnamese generation for the efforts to respond to climate change in the country as well as at the global scale. In particular, the workshop introduced the purposes and main activities to be implemented of the Mekong Delta CoRe project in the Mekong Delta.

During the discussion session of the meeting, students had a chance to express their interest in the Mekong Delta CoRe project, and shared about the difficulties in finding opportunities to participate and barriers that limit personal participation in activities to respond to climate change. Finally, all questions from the students were cleared up and explained by speakers at the meeting.
